CoilsKeep in mind the following basic rules: ‘DD’ pattern coils handle heavily mineralized (noisy) soils much better than the mono coils, but Mono wound coils are more sensitive and detect about 10-15% more deeply in low mineralized soils which are much quieter. Minelab GP Extreme or GP3000 detectors will only discriminate out iron with DD coils. Most serious prospectors carry DD and mono coils. COILTEK COILS (All Prices are discounted) Pro Series detects deeper! 10” Elliptical MonoWeighs 455gms, and is deadly on small stuff! It will pick up specks and yet has reasonable depth for nuggets up to small fingernail size, but inferior depth on large nuggets. It will find small gold in places where all other detectors and coils have thrashed the ground. It’s also ideal for detecting crevices in creeks and other tight places.
10” Elliptical DD ProSimilar to the above mono and would be used when the ground is especially noisy with mineralization or if discrimination is required. However on quiet/medium ground the mono coil is markedly more sensitive.
14” Mono roundWeighs 834gms .A very good all round mono coil. It is excellent on a wide range of nugget sizes from fraction of a gram to very large nuggets. Recommended for all but highly mineralized ground. It’s suitable for previously detected or new ground. 17”x 10” UFO Mono Elliptical CoilAnother good all round. It is an open spider design. This is a very versatile and sensitive coil—quick coverage and good for tight places. While having good depth on big nuggets, this coil is deadly on smaller stuff, but won’t be as good as the 10”elliptical on the match head bits. Price $299
14” DD round Pro 947gms This coil is one of the most popular coils out on the field. Because being a DD, it handles ALL types of soils and it has a reasonable, 14”scan coverage with good depth, yet is light enough to swing quickly and detects deeper than the standard 11” DD coil
17”x11 Elliptical DD Pro Coiltek’s latest coil. Almost identical performance and weight to the 14” DD pro coils, but better for speedy ground coverage and pinpointing and fitting into tight places such as between rocks.
24”x 12” Mono Elliptical UFO Coil900gms. Jack’s favourite for quick coverage when searching new country. Very light, being of “spider” construction. It won’t miss the small or larger sized nuggets either. It has good depth and is very quiet for a mono loop. Many operators prefer the 17” UFO version of this, finding the 24” a little large for them.
18” DD Round Pro Coil.Serious prospectors working in highly mineralized ground, looking for deeper, bigger gold use this coil. It’s a bit heavy but will detect very deeply on all but the tiniest nuggets in hot ground. Salt Coils11” Round 14” Round 18” Round Designed especially for the salt lakes of WA. These will handle salt country where even the DDs won’t.
21” x 27” DD, Mono & Salt CoilsThese giant coils aren’t commonly used for general prospecting but are great when you suspect a big nugget may be lurking in deep ground. Best used with a “swing arm” which enables a two handed swing. Weight is about 1800gms with the mono slightly less. 1metre (1000mm) x 500mm UFO Elliptical Coils (40” x 20”) Designed for ultra-fast ground coverage and trolley mounting.
